Text #4180233

The policy came from a consistent disdain for "Oriental Despotism", from which Indians needed to be emancipated. Despotism was something that distinguished the Oriental state from its European counterpart; but ironically, it was the same logic that provided an "implicit justification" for the "paternalism of the Raj".
