Kepler si predstavoval snehovú vločku ako niečo zložené z malinkých ľadových guličiek. O guličkách sa domnieval, že ak ich chceme v rovine poukladať čo najhustejšie, potom najlepšie je takzvané hexagonálne usporiadanie, v ktorom každá gulička akoby ležala v jednej šesťuholníkovej bunke včelieho plástu. Ak by boli guličky vo vločkách naukladané čo najhustejšie - uvažoval Kepler - mohol by byť tvar vločiek dôsledkom tejto hexagonálnej symetrie.
